A Comment about the Captions and Technical Analysis.
The rug captions contain standard descriptions and technical information for Oriental rugs. SME stands for State Museum of Ethnography and the museum's accession number for each rug is noted. References within the text are by Catalog Number. Measurements are given in feet and meters. On a few pieces complete information on knot count or other measurements was not available by press time. Under "Knot" the absence of a reference to the pile direction is understood to mean the pile "looks up." The information provided under the heading "Purchased" is from Dudin's records and the words within quotes are his comments on the item. A more extensive list of Dudin's attributions, places of purchase, and current attribution of those items is on pages 78 and 79. Publications listed under "Published" are cited more fully in the footnotes to the text.

[Editor's Note: The above foreword appeared in Volume 11, No. 1 of Oriental Rug Review, October/November, 1990, our VI International Conference on Oriental Carpets (I.C.O.C.) issue. The Dudin Collection was shipped from Moscow for exhibition at the conference site in San Francisco, but it never arrived. So, the collection's appearance in our pages was its only presence at the conference. The collection was later recovered and returned to Moscow. There is a complete and detailed description of Volume 11, number 1, along with a back issue order form at the bottom of this file. Because there are over 40 embedded graphics in the article we have broken it up into two pages. Even so it does take some time to download. The good news is that once it downloads you have the illustrations aligned with the text. Just below the article links is a table listing The Dudin Collection by collection numbers, Dudin's attribution of the pieces, place of purchase, and modern attributions. The collection numbers in bold indicate that the rug is in our exhibition Let's look at some great rugs.]
